Frequently Asked Questions
What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty. GST has four main slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, plus a special 3% rate for gold and precious stones.
How do I calculate GST on a price?
To add GST: GST Amount = Original Price × GST Rate ÷ 100. Total Price = Original Price + GST Amount. For example, on ₹10,000 at 18%: GST = ₹1,800, Total = ₹11,800.
How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Original Price = GST-Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100). GST Amount = GST-Inclusive Price − Original Price. Example: ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST → Original = ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000. GST = ₹1,800.
What is CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are each half of the applicable GST rate and apply to intra-state transactions. IGST (Integrated GST) equals the full GST rate and applies to inter-state transactions and imports. For example, 18% GST on a local sale = 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
Which goods fall under 28% GST?
The 28% GST slab covers luxury and sin goods: cars, motorcycles above 350cc, air conditioners, large TVs (>32 inches), tobacco products, aerated drinks, pan masala, and certain consumer electronics. Some items also attract an additional cess on top of 28% GST.
What items are exempt from GST (0% GST)?
Essential goods are exempt: fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, meat (unprocessed), cereals, bread, salt, healthcare services, education services, and public transport. These are either zero-rated or nil-rated.
How does Input Tax Credit (ITC) work?
ITC allows registered businesses to claim a credit for GST paid on business purchases and reduce their GST liability on sales. For example, if you paid ₹1,800 GST on raw materials and collected ₹3,600 GST on sales, you only remit ₹1,800 to the government.
What is the GST rate on services?
Most services are taxed at 18% GST (telecom, banking, IT, restaurants with AC). Healthcare and educational services are exempt. Construction services are at 12–18%. Restaurants without AC are at 5%. Hotels above ₹7,500/night are at 18%.
Is GST included in the MRP?
Yes. In India, the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) printed on packaged goods is GST-inclusive. You cannot be charged more than MRP. To find the pre-GST price: Original = MRP ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100).
What is the composition scheme under GST?
Small businesses with annual turnover below ₹1.5 crore (₹75L for services) can opt for the composition scheme. They pay a flat tax rate (1% for traders, 2% for manufacturers, 5% for restaurants) and file quarterly returns instead of monthly. They cannot claim ITC or charge GST on invoices.
